Litherland REMYCA Football Club

With links to Bootle YMCA and a local working men’s club, Litherland REMYCA F.C. has strong ties to the community it’s situated in. For over 50 years, it has been a place for people to connect, providing opportunities not only for fitness, friendship and sport but also a positive sense of local identity.

In this sense, Litherland REMYA is much more than just a football club. Its 25 teams and 300 players are just one part of a much larger community-led project that promotes wellbeing, training opportunities, employment, social cohesion and local pride.

Litherland REMYA F.C. first got support from Power to Change in 2016 when they won the Bright Sparks competition at the Community Business Show in Liverpool. They received £6,000 of business development support to explore the feasibility of putting the club into community-hands.

The club is now a community benefit society and run as a community owned co-operative. £1 shares in the club can be bought by club members and the wider community alike and each shareholder has a vote on decisions affecting the future of the club, which are made transparently and on a democratic basis. They recently featured in a Co-op Bank advert.

A year later, the club applied to the Bright Ideas Fund and were awarded a grant to access business development training and advice to carry out business planning, better community engagement, marketing and measure their social impact.

This development support will allow the club to become a fully-fledged community-run business and explore opportunities to create a sports and social hub for the community of Litherland and Ford. This includes plans to develop its own all-weather facility with education spaces to be used by the wider community.
