Lynton and Lynmouth, Devon – regenerating seaside towns
The Lynton and Lynmouth community has been invited to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan to help identify ways of regenerating these seaside towns.
The dramatic coastal towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, within Exmoor National Park, receive thousands of visitors a year. But low wages within the tourist industry coupled with high house prices mean that there’s a real lack of affordable housing. In 2011, the community was given a chance to help address this issue, when the area was selected by the government to be 1 of 17 in the UK to trial a Neighbourhood Plan.
Having appointed a steering group and project team, they’re in the process of drawing together a 10-20 strong team of neighbourhood representatives from local businesses, clubs and residential areas, who can engage the community.
Throughout the process, they’ll be gathering people’s opinions and ideas, using techniques from engaging people at the farmers’ market, to knocking on doors, to actually mapping out proposed sites for an affordable housing development.
